Deviations

I havta say, the last few weeks had been full of delightfully weird things and, being at an age where I’ve come to appreciate all sorts of experiences, I’ve to admit the break from the typical is something I need.

The month rolled by with its usual though: maddeningly early HD mornings, commutes made bearable by my Spotify playlist, workdays marked by diet meals and meetings and paperwork and deadlines, nights spent wondering when sleep will come. But it was also punctuated by curious episodes and awkward situations and amazing events, by run-ins with new people and old acquaintances; a spectrum of experiences which often made me wonder…why do certain things happen now, to me, and what does it aim to teach me?

When the month kicked off, I managed to get myself sick with a tummy ache after a night spent at some side street of the metro, eating what I realize afterwards was really unclean food. I’ve always thought I had a sturdy enough stomach to eat anything. Lesson learned: I don’t. Despite the aftermath I thought that night was time well spent: I enjoyed a number of interesting conversations, and a rather weird one from an apparent gatecrasher who’s provided me insights on…y’ready…bridge engineering, which is a subject I don’t deal with on a regular basis. Curious ep, check.

A week later, I found myself in the middle–or, perhaps ‘by the sidelines’ would be a better descriptor–of a cat fight between two exes. I tell you, it wasn’t a pleasant experience but like a bug caught on flypaper, there I was glued to my spot as I watched tempers rise. Why I was there was prob’ly my fault; let’s just say dem flycatchers looked so temptingly good that bugs just can’t resist, haha. And it seems crossing paths is the theme of the month. Today I’ve expanded the list of folks I’ve met by making acquaintances with, well…an ex’s gf. The circumstance was unusual but I havta to say I was rather grateful for the company. Leaving it at that, it didn’t make it less weird. Awkward? Double check.

Curiosities and awkwardness aside I was also blown away by amazing things that transpired this month. There was the much-awaited Wednesday evening with the Queen, which rolled into a big ball of exciting anticipation, what with six months of waiting for the moment. And what a moment it was: spell-binding and heartwarming and surreal would be a few words I would use but you just havta be there to know what I mean. Then there was last Saturday when my GFs and I trekked to an evening party way down south and caught up with the hosts’ musician friends and, with only a guitar and a drum box, they jammed the entire night, and it was full of laughs; lively and lovely, it was. It was so fantastic that it made frustrated musicians like me extremely jealous of their talent. Being a superfan of music, Feb had left me tons of memories to remember it by.

But, amazing doesn’t always require the loud. I’ve had many quiet moments too and just because there were no words, just because there was no music, didn’t make them less of an experience. There was that leisurely albeit belated lunch which left not only the tummy full but also our hearts to be filled, that after-lunch coffee which stretched to dinner and dessert as we caught up on the deep and the mundane, that afternoon massage which led to a catnap and was exactly what we needed that day. All with the folks I love, and that’s what made the quiet special.

I could go on and on and on, but see, daylight will be here shortly and I must get some sleep as I get ready for the last day of the month. I’ve had quite a jumpstart this month that I’m keeping my fingers crossed for March; hell, make that the entire summer. Thank you, fab Feb.

Happy leap day, people!
