You spoke to me last night
In a language I knew
But figure out what you meant
I couldn’t quite
It started off with ‘babe’
and a ‘later’ and ‘I love you’
Catchphrases long overdue
Sandwiched within a part of me
That once was part of you
And from those five words
A babel of emotions
Yelped ripped swelled
But perhaps I’ve only just misheard
Your voice one minute so close
The next now only whispers of a ghost
Promises unkept
That’s how we should remember this by
So I didn’t even say goodbye
I just put the phone down
And wept
